About Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg is a city in Montgomery County, Maryland. It is the fourth largest city in the state. Gaithersburg is located to the northwest of Washington, D.C.

Gaithersburg's history began in 1765 as a small agricultural settlement known as Log Town. By the 1850s, the area was known to inhabitants as Gaitherburg, named after Benjaimin Gaither, a local landowner. Gaithersburg was incorporated in 1878.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is headquartered in Gaithersburg. Other major employers in the city include IBM, and Lockheed Martin Information Systems. The 220th Military Police Brigade of the United States Army Reserve is located in Gaithersburg.
