About Passaic

Passaic is a city in Passaic County, New Jersey.  The city is located on the Passaic Rivernorth of Newark.

First settled in 1678 by Dutch traders, Passaic was chartered as a city in 1873.  Both thecity and the river get their name from the Lenape word pahsayèk meaning valley.

Passaic has been called "The Birthplace of Television".  In 1931, W2XCD, an experimental television station, began transmitting from the DeForest Radio Corp. in Passaic. It was the first television station to transmit into people's homes.
